INDONESIA

Following our visit to India, Sinead, Emily, and I journeyed to Indonesia for a couple of weeks. Our adventure began on Gili Island Trawangan, followed by excursions to Seminyak, Kuta, Uluwatu, Canggu, and Ubud.

Indonesia stands as one of the world's iconic treasures. It's a bohemian haven that blends yoga retreats with laid-back beach life. The region offers a diverse range of activities—from surfing and hippy fashion to martial arts and a vibrant nightlife—all within a reach. However, it was the Balinese people that captivated me the most with their warmth.

The locals are exceptionally friendly, modest yet welcoming, and possess a great sense of humor. Once, after finding myself slightly stranded, I was given money by sex workers and escorted home safely on a moped (no pun intended)

The food is amazing! We ate various interpretations of Nasi Goreng (which translates to 'fried rice') almost daily. It was also here that Emily celebrated her 30th birthday.

Watching sunsets at Potato Head Beach Club while listening to an acoustic rendition of 'Fields of Gold' by Van Morrison, lounging on vibrant bean bags under stylish Tedungs—Bali, with all its offerings, has become one of my favorite places on Earth.

GILI TRAWANGAN

'Gili Trawangan is an exceptionally small island, detached from Bali's mainland. Here, the absence of cars leads to bicycles being the primary mode of transportation. Additionally, horse-drawn carts are available, which have historically garnered a negative reputation due to animal mistreatment and a general lack of education regarding animal care. Nonetheless, I would still advocate for either walking or biking since the island's diminutive size renders these carts unnecessary. If there's concern over the financial impact on the local community, consider donating to charities that offer care for these horses instead.'

Embark on a boat journey to witness the captivating sunsets, explore the underwater sculptures, and unwind. We allocated one day to hire two locals who guided us on their boat, where we snorkeled in various spots. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we observed flying fish skimming the water's surface, creating a truly memorable experience."

On the east of the Island you can snorkel swim alongside Turtles in the bay without having to venture too deep. This was a great experience but I do regret not taking up the chance to go scuba diving. I have a friend who works as an instructor out there, and her pictures are incredible. But at the time I lacked confidence to do it, and I was also wearing a hair-system and if I buggered that up on the other side of the world I may not have been able to replace it.

Rememer to have good Ocean Etiquette!
